THE CARAMEL ST JOSEPH Mechref HAS AN IMAGE OF LEBANON AND PLURAL

Caramel St. Joseph Mechref, like Lebanon and a plural

These are not buildings, but an educational project launched 75 years ago that the nuns of St. Joseph came Caramel Mechref to celebrate during a Jubilee Mass has taken an official stamp and national, to which the entire educational community was involved, from the youngest to oldest.

"The happy chance" - the word is John of the Cross - dates back to 1935 with the arrival in port three Carmelites of St. Joseph came to Lebanon "lead" to God. It
Achrafieh they first settled and opened a school and a vocational course household. In 1941, they move Mousseitbé. But in 1946, after the difficult years of the Second World War, the opportunity presents itself to occupy the barracks Veillotte, the French army comes to evacuate, rue de Verdun. This is where they will further offshore until 1995.

In 1975 civil war broke out. Led by Sister Benedicta, a worthy daughter of St. Teresa, the Carmelites of St. Joseph took the bold decision to keep school doors open, convinced that it was appropriate 'To oppose arms another fight. " The group facilitator, trained lay and religious, chose to engage. Parents, against all odds, take the risk of sending their children daily. While death was his work in Lebanon, his life was in Caramel St. Joseph.

space asylum

"At the heart of the roar of bombs and the chaos of war, Verdun Street, remembers Evelyn Hamdan, a former teacher, the school presented itself as a sanctuary, a protective space, somehow asylum, where students, young and old, established communication with adults, apprehensive of knowledge, sharpening their intellect, or simply dreaming of a peaceful world. This haven of mind, we had the strength of character sœurr Benedict, who led a resistance action against the disintegration of Lebanon by the decision to keep the school open by years of violence 75-76 (most other establishments remain closed). We also had the heroism of teachers who answered the call, despite the perils of the journey, sometimes under fire from snipers as the infamous passage of the Museum. And accomplished the prodigy student distressed ran every morning around this shelter they drew colorful horizons of hope and knowledge. "
" ... Today, I wonder how we could ensure continuity in the work since most often we did not have the same students in the class (at the discretion of districts affected by the bombing) or in the middle of the course arose haggard parents to collect their children? And yet each of us knew that he managed to follow up the lessons into a smooth progression. In the fury of the war we had to hone our teaching skills and we find strength develop quality education to our students face waiting our message of life in a world of death. "

Transfer to Mechref

In 1994, the approach of the expiration of the lease, a new adventure begins. The land is no longer available, we must look elsewhere. But "the glorious St. Joseph" before. With land donated to Mechref near Damour, evacuation allowances and donations, the continuity of the educational project is assured. The location of the new land at the crossroads of three regions in a country to rebuild, represents, along with a challenge, a real potential for the future. The community is determined to act in the sense that it recognizes as "undesirable people". Thus at an image of Lebanon as a plural and the astonishing resilience, the project rebounds.
The challenges are many. How many are aware of? At the end of the war, we must train the generation that is facing Lebanon and build a rule of law. Educational level, the basic intuition is that the educator should be a smuggler, a person who creates the student, as begets life. It is therefore essential to combine it with governance. On the basis of this operation, trust, a keyword present from the outset.
"It was in 1970, remembers one of these" smugglers, "Henri Awit, now vice-chancellor of the LSU Academic Affairs, who describes his own" beginning "teacher. I had just two licenses in philosophy and Arabic language and literature. I had job interviews in twenty schools. With very polite and kind words, I was meant everywhere the same rejection: you lack experience, and we regret not being able to recruit a beginner. "
" It's the end of this laborious and frustrating tour continues Henri Awit, Sister Benedicta, then director of the school, received me in early July in his office in the Rue Verdun. I would submit my CV to be reduced while at my university and told him very simply from the failure of my previous attempts. It was surprising then that thought: If I do not commit you, you will still be in ten years or twenty years, even the young beginner. "

Keyword: trust

" The words of Sister Benedict stood obviously makes sense, says the academic supervisor. But beyond the wisdom and insight that characterized his words expressed the confidence that the Sisters of Caramel made it a point to place spontaneously in those who work with them. In this, they lived fairly well described as an ideal Romain Gary White Dog, "We must continue to trust men, because it is less important to be disappointed, betrayed and mocked by them than continuing to believe in themselves and trust them. In addition, the Caramel St. Joseph refuses to be an elite club. True to an injunction of Paul VI - "Sooner or later the time will come when Lazarus may seek to table with the rich man "- he wants to remain accessible. "Should we insist, says Henri Awit is first on the benches of our schools, in the equal dignity and equal children of God, Lazarus is invited to sit beside the rich . The school, for everything she gives instruction and education, transmission of values and life skills, involves much more than what we see! "

A successful shift

As with several other Catholic schools, the history of Caramel St. Joseph is a school that was centered over in urban areas where she had first blossomed. Think Jamhour, Mont La Salle or Champville. But what distinguishes the school is that it was offset to a predominantly Muslim region, namely Mechref at the crossroads of urban areas of Beirut, Sidon and the Chouf. Risky at first glance, this shift has successfully provided the settlement area of an educational project of exceptional value "civil" and an extraordinary impact on the Lebanese social fabric. Mechref, which is 25 minutes from Beirut, and in the opposite direction of traffic, educates 700 students in only 21.10% Christians and attracts both the region and Aramoun Choueifat (29.19%) and Beirut (17.49%), Saida (15.46%), Chouf (14.31%), the southern suburbs ( 8.38%) and the immediate surroundings of Mechref and Damour (15.17%). We see, is an extraordinary case of brewing social and religious high performance citizen, whose potential is still untapped. Because the school of Caramel, by choice as by its location, a place of education or Lebanon is honored among students as well as among teachers. Apart from religious education classes, given separately, the school is, according to Sister Mariam Awit year-Nur, the current top of the congregation, "a place of education for freedom and human values, a place that allows everyone to happen to himself, with the other, another is his challenge and opportunity. "

"What matters to us," she said again, but man alive and standing, whatever circumstances and challenges. "Mechref is also a certified school which prepares the French bac. Certainly, the establishment is run by a religious congregation arrived at the time of the Mandate, but this circle has since been widely and deeply rooted in reality Lebanon. Only one of eight members of the community is French. The other seven are Arabs, including five Lebanese. A center for prayer meetings to share the word, an iconography workshop, multiple catechetical meetings or cultural ensure the spiritual influence of the community. In the history of Catholic schools in Lebanon, each case is unique. The tendency to shift in search of a wider space, was not general. Some schools have remained attached to Beirut - and the College of brothers, Gemmayzeh, the sisters of Besancon, Wadi Abu Jmil, the Franciscan in Badaro, the Sisters of Nazareth in Achrafieh - others have tried an adventure. That of Caramel St. Joseph is in its way, one of the most exemplary. The war has marked all these schools, but Lebanon as a project of life and not death, remained at the heart of their mission. Mechref amply demonstrates.

OF POETRY, THE PROSE, Andree Chedid A FACE MULTIPLE

From poetry to prose, Andree Chedid multi-faceted

A compassion for suffering humanity. Words and simple stories to tell. In a fluid flow where even the dark corners have some light. "Being a fictional route, be passing," Andree Chedid, between tenderness, reflection and testimony, is still in its ceremonial and his retinue of words.

At ninety years ago, two books today in front of bookstores. At the heart of poetry and prose. Without nothing, or almost no limit or bounds to each other. True Editions Flammarion, Andree Chedid, poet, novelist and playwright, gets a full workout for the literary season! Born in 1920 to Lebanese parents in Cairo, the Nile lady living in France since 1946 ended up opting for the language of Racine after experimenting, there are almost half a century, poetry in English. It has mastered language as perfectly as his adopted language, French. It was called, I think, On the trail of my fancy ... But who remembers them? We would rather more likely to evoke the early writings such Two Lands, Counter-singing or face first ... Mother and grandmother filled singers Louis and Mathieu Chedid, including the hit songs prance successes, the author of Nefertiti and Akhenaten's dream, crowned with numerous awards (including Louise Labe), has this special gift of select words and word sounds, quite frugal simplicity, to transcribe a transparent world and explores light that does not least from what is unsaid and unseen. Through a lively pen and fertile, her voice has established itself over the years with numerous collections of poetry and modern law, a dozen plays that revisit history but also the pain of living contemporary, and above all novels and stories in the same vein as his dramaturgical concerns.
For 2010, this first collection of poetry under (very Teilhard de Chardin) The stuff of the universe * (Flammarion - 147pages) where a lady of venerable age reconsider the past. She knows the value and weight of words before storing, with wisdom and discernment on the blank pages. Looking back
benevolent but lucid, rich experience of a lived intensely, sometimes tinged with a certain humor to tell a poetic musicality imbued with a hushed and ethereal on all an existential journey, without ever being pompous or use a heavy or overblown lyricism. Without being pejorative or gear, there is always an air of youthful freshness.
childhood, the mystery of the years change us (not really transform us except with the skin wrinkles), the meaning of a passage human beauty and its Glare, the nature of things that shape our lives, the fragility and precariousness of being, the attachment to the land (all land like an intrepid world citizen who kills all the gates), the inexorable disease and old age is all that the narrative poetic a woman who believes strong as iron otherness, while questioning the human condition, tirelessly, continuously, without ever losing hope in this great fraternity that binds the living ... With words like these mild and sunny shores which they emerged. All this is perfectly evident, without recourse to the umbrella of St. Augustine, Shakespeare, Rilke and Dylan Thomas. Because the player is the twin brother of the man who holds the pen. In a shift, and stealth imperceptible, between two linguistic pirouettes (she who dreamed of being a dancer!), Here that flies with the sweetness of a 'felucca' on the tranquil waters of a river to pages a novel that takes its themes never abandoned, always dug deep, still under a new light, always identified as close as they beat the deepest, most secret. The four dead
John of God (Flammarion - 177 pages) is the seventeenth novel by the author of City of fertile and multiple child. Once again, the narrative "chédidienne" across subjects dear to him (the places where we take root, the intermittence of the heart, the impact of history, the importance of freedom the acceptance of otherness), the confrontation with the Grim Reaper is inevitable. Through flashbacks and interludes from the life of John of God (a name almost Canadian) and juxtaposed to reconstitute a piece of history, the turmoil of love, suffering from the disease and the approach to death. Of course, with such a title of the book, one thinks immediately of the saying that says that cats have seven lives ... But John of God unless he has as much, however, remains a survivor, for four times, death ... Symbolic and real. The loss of his Catholic faith to the "filth" of his illness, to his exile from a beloved Spain and the fall of the Berlin Wall, this is a tortuous route for a contemporary true child of the century dreams shattered. Always with that distance, your elegant lyricism without emphatic, almost cold, which characterizes the author of the Sixth day to speak of being, its anxieties, its constant questioning. A book
mature, fluid style, atmosphere serious but not without a few charming touches of humor and mischievous.

Quotations from "The fabric of the universe"

Where is my land?

My country is everywhere
Of all the world's land
It is in the other hand
It is in addition

My country is everywhere around the edge of the Drop In

And
Step In And still live

In the farthest.

Terrace

From my terrace I watched the earth

Horrified By its raids
His bloodshed

From my terrace I watched the earth

Dazzled by his wonderful
Her sudden appearances

Since I slide the brightness
Shadows
I sail
Between rainbow sky
Clartés and suspicion.
And in here.

The concept of contrast is, in itself, I must confess willingly, a concept kitsch, outdated and overly exciting. I tell you straight out: an infinity almost immeasurable. And yet, how about me, how is it that You, Conceptual Girl Genius greatest photograph of all time, beautiful Goddess of the Concept, beautiful Empress of Good Taste, how is it that you you down to degrading practices such as the use of buzzwords and the wind so that they become cool? THE AMAZING ODYSSEY INSTITUTE OF CHRISTIANITY IN THE EAST OF THE CHRISTIANS OF EAST

The library includes many books on and by Eastern Christians , Lebanon, Egypt, Syria ...

The incredible odyssey of an Institute on Eastern Christianity

63 years ago, 25,000 books on Eastern Christianity were narrowly saved, illegally transferred to France after closed by the Communists of the Institute of Byzantine Studies in Bucharest. The center reopens Monday in Romania.

"The institute, founded by Catholic religious Assumptionists, was among the world's leading experts of the Christian East. He always had a checkered history," explains Father French Michel Kubler, director of new center of Bucharest.
Founded in Istanbul in the late nineteenth century, the Institute of Byzantine Studies in Bucharest had to move after the arrival of Ataturk's secular regime. In the 1930s, Romania was both a country and calm the heart of Orthodox Christianity.
The Communists came to power in 1947 changed all that. The French religious
, internationally recognized researchers from the CNRS, were ordered to leave.
One of them, Jean Emile, managed to hide and organize with the help of some students the rescue of 25 000 books, a collection unique.
"The legend says they threw the books over the wall of the Institute, in the gardens of the Embassy of France. More likely, we think they drilled a hole in one wall of the sub ground to get the books quietly, "says Kubler. The valuable library
cross the Iron Curtain by train, in wagons sealed considered "diplomatic bag" and will be hosted in Paris, where she still is.
The neo-Gothic building of the Institute in the center of Bucharest was he transformed into Polyclinic, the chapel became a workshop of dentures.
Today, 21 years after the fall the regime of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania, the congregation has recovered Assumptionist this building, like many owners of their property looted.
The few doctors who were still practicing in the building were compensated for up practice elsewhere.
Monday, opens again the Centre for Byzantine Studies, which wants to boost, thanks in part in debates and conferences, dialogue between Christians of the East, mostly Orthodox, and those of the West of the Latin rite.
A large library was reconstituted with 15 000 books from Athens and Rome which parts Rare as "euchologue" a huge Ukrainian prayer book of 1646, engraved and hand-written, which exist only three copies in the world
addition to philosophy shelves or iconography, an art where the Orthodox excellent library also includes many books on and by Eastern Christians, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria ... At a time when these Christians are threatened in some countries, "it is also important to know the liveliness of their heritage," says Kubler.
Specialist Fathers of the Church, common to Orthodox and Catholics, Father Lucian Dinca, 40, will be responsible for this rare library. Member of the Catholic minority in Romania, he explains that he "rediscovered its eastern side," while studying in France and Canada.
"Before, in my village were told Catholics to confess if they had danced at a party with an Orthodox," he recalls.
Today he has built bridges between his community and the Orthodox majority in Romania, breaking some stereotypes and prejudices.
"I love this picture of John Paul II said that Romania must breathe with two lungs, East and West," he concludes.
